When were built the first tunnels?

The first tunnels were built in the old Egypt and old Babylon as irrigation system. Later Romans made the tunels more complicated than Egyptians and Babylonians. A famous example of his great engineering tunnels is the sewer maxima. 

Currently the tunnels are made with large heavy machinery and explosives but before these works were being made to pick and shovel and much more difficult to build.
